What the three measures mean
Free chlorine
Added so the supply stays safe across a long, hot distribution network. It oxidises the lipids that keep skin and hair pliable.
Hardness
Calcium and magnesium. They bind with soap instead of rinsing away, and leave scale on tile and fixtures.
Total dissolved solids
Everything else the water is carrying, including metals and sediment picked up between the plant and the shower.
A lower score means the water asks more of your skin and hair. It is not a safety rating — municipal supply across the Gulf meets drinking standards. It measures how gentle the water is to wash in.
